Introduction
An x-y stage, controller and software for conducting ASTM C457 Procedures A and B were developed for an MDOT Transportation Materials Research Center supplemental project in 2019. The stage is constructed from readily available components purchased from online retailers. A small number of structural elements were designed and fabricated to complete the stage. The system was designed with low-cost and ease of maintenance in mind, utilizing ballscrew actuators and an Arduino-based controller to drive the two NEMA17 stepper motors. The server operates on a Raspberry Pi and Franklin firmware is used for motion control. A common game controller is used to capture user input and control the stage. The user interface is provided over a web connection, supporting most internet browsers. The interface can be served over a local area network or a monitor, keyboard and mouse can be attached directly to the Raspberry Pi creating the standalone system.

Images in the following instructions can be clicked on to enlarge.

Initial Settings
Organization
Reports generated by the system include a letterhead containing organization details.
* Click the "Organization Details" button.clear
* Enter the organization details to include in report letterhead and click "Save".clear
* Organization details are stored on the server.

Mapping Controller Buttons
The actions performed by each of the numerous buttons on the game controller is configurable, and a button map is required to perform an analysis. The software will not permit performance of an analysis until at least one button map. Multiple button maps can be stored, allowing customization for each user if required. If only one button map is stored, it will be the default. If more button maps are stored, one of the maps can be designated as the default map and will be selected by default upon starting a new analysis. Users are presented with s election of maps if there are more than one.

ASTM C457 Procedure A requires only three counters, one each for paste, void and "other". Procedure B requires one additional counter "Void Intercept". Additional counters are available for Procedure B, if desired. The software will not permit a map to be saved if the four required counters for Procedure B are not assigned to buttons. "Void Intercept" and any optional Procedure B counters will be ignored when performing Procedure A.

An additional action, "Save Position" allows the user to save the stage position during an analysis. Saved positions will be listed in the main interface. Clicking a saved position will cause the stage move to that position.

If more than one button map is available, the display will include a map selection at the top of the dialog and a checkbox to indicate the selected map is the default map. The default map cannot be deleted.clear

Manual Control of Stage
The stage can be controlled with the joysticks on the game controller when not running an analysis.

* Click the "Control Stage" button to enable control of the stage using the game controller's joysticks.
* Click "Cancel" when done with the stage.

* Move the stage so that one corner of the analysis area is in the field of view and click the "A" button on the game controller. The "Continue" button will be displayed only after pressing the "A" button. If necessary, reposition the stage and click "Continue" to store the location of the first corner.clear
* Move the stage to the corner diagonal from the first corner such that the area to be analyzed is covered by a rectangle having the two selected corners. Click the "A" button on the game controller. If necessary, reposition the stage and click "Continue" to store the location of the second corner.clear
* If the selected area is smaller than that specified for concrete having aggregate with the top size selected, a warning will be displayed. Analysis can continue, or a new area can be selected.clear

ASTM C457 requires a minimum of three counters, one each for paste, void and "other". These are the only three counters provided for Procedure A, but additional counters are available for Procedure B, if desired. The software will not permit a map to be saved if the three required counters are not assigned to buttons.

An additional action, "Save Position" allows the user to save the stage position during an analysis. Saved positions will be listed in the main interface. Clicking a saved position will cause the stage move to that position.

MDOT Iowa Pore Index Device Instructions
Introduction
MDOT commissioned design and construction of a custom device for performing Iowa Pore Index testing of carbonate aggregate. The device has automated much of the test, requiring minimal user interaction.

These instructions cover use of the device.

No standard method for this test has been established.

Importance of Test
The Iowa Pore Index is a measure of the capacity of a carbonate aggregate to absorb water. A known mass of carbonate aggregate is immersed in water. Air pressure is applied and the amount of water pushed into aggregate pores is measured after 60 seconds and again after 15 minutes. The volumes are corrected for expansion and trapped air in the measuring system, producing two values; the Primary Load and the Secondary Load. Experience has demonstrated that these values are related to the durability of the aggregate and the development of "D" cracking in concrete pavements.

Methodology
The device requires measurement of expansion and trapped air prior to performing the first test of the day. This is performed by running a test with a dense and impervious aggregate proxy (e.g. glass marbles) and recording Primary and Secondary volume changes.

A known mass of carbonate aggregate is placed in the pressure chamber of the device and the chamber's lid is secured in place. The device is programmed to purge the system with water, during which time the operator manipulates the pressure chamber so as to remove as much air as possible. Following purging, the operator adjusts the water level, records the initial volumes from the sight glasses, and continues the test. The device will automatically apply air pressure and isolate the primary and secondary sight glasses at the appropriate times, allowing the operator to perform other functions while the test is performed. At the conclusion of the test, the operator records the final volumes from the sight glasses and drains the system.

Instructions
Expansion and Entrapped Air Correction
Prior to performing the first test with aggregate for the day, determine system expansion correction by running the test with 5 kg of an impervious and dense aggregate proxy (e.g. glass marbles). Calculate the volume changes:

::P<sub>corr</sub> = P<sub>f</sub> - P<sub>i</sub>

::S<sub>corr</sub> = S<sub>f</sub> - S<sub>i</sub>

Performing a Test
#Weigh approximately 5 kg of the material to test, recording weight to the nearest 0.1 gram as W.
#Place the material into the pressure chamber and tip the chamber so that space is created for the down-pipe in the chamber's cover.
#Place the cover on the chamber and seal in place, tightening all four wingnuts.
#Insure that the air and water supplies are attached to the device and turned on. Ensure the drain and vent lines are secured in an appropriate drain.
#Start the test; the device will start water flowing into the system.
#While filling with water, rock the chamber or beat it with a rubber mallet to dislodge and remove air from the chamber and aggregate.
#Three short beeps will sound when the device has been purged with water. Adjust the water level in the sight glasses as required by pulsing the water or drain valves.
#Click "Continue". The device will prompt to record levels.
#Record the the level in the primary sight glass as Pi and the level in the secondary secondary sight glass as Si.
#Select "Continue". The device will automatically adjust valves and apply air pressure. The remainder of the test can be performed unattended and will conclude in 15 minutes.
#Five long beeps will sound at the conclusion of the test. A prompt will appear to record levels.
#Record the level in the primary sight glass as Pf and the level in the secondary sight glass as Sf.
#Click "Continue".
#Click "Drain System" to initiate draining.
# Remove the cover from the pressure chamber.
#Remove the wet aggregate from the chamber.
<strong>*To minimize corrosion, the chamber should be left open and dry when not in use.</strong>
#The corrected volume changes are calculated for both primary and secondary loads:
::V<sub>P</sub> = P<sub>f</sub> - P<sub>i</sub> - P<sub>corr</sub>
::V<sub>S</sub> = S<sub>f</sub> - S<sub>i</sub> - S<sub>corr</sub>

Calculating Pore Index
Primary Pore Index:

P = 9000 * V<sub>P</sub> / W

Secondary Pore Index:

S = 9000 * V<sub>S</sub> / W
